Gum Disease
9 out of 10 Malaysian adults have signs of gum disease (reported by the Ministry of Health), but very few realize that they have gum disease.
Today, gum disease has overtaken cavities as the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. The most common symptom of gum disease is bleeding gums as a result of bacteria causing damage to the gums. Gum disease is best treated early to have a better chance of saving the teeth. We treat bleeding gums, shaky teeth(make them firm again) , shrinkage of gum(with gum augmentation), gummy smiles, etc.
Who is at risk of having gum (periodontal) disease? The common risk factors include:
1. Inadequate oral hygiene and doesn't do regular scaling
2. Smoking
3. Diabetes
4. Hormone changes in women, including pregnant women
5. Certain medication that reduce saliva flow(causing dry mouth) or causing enlargement of gum
6. Hereditary: Some people are more prone to gum disease based on their family genetic influences.
