Helium gas is used as tracer gas. The gas is charged into the test part whereas the vacuum chamber is evacuated with the vacuum pump and connected to the mass spectrometer (MS). If any of the helium passes through a leak, the MS responds with a signal in proportion to the amount of helium, therefore alarm is triggered.
