During pregnancy, some women develop high blood sugar even if they have never had diabetes before. This condition is called gestational diabetes. The MGTT test, or Modified Glucose Tolerance Test, is a simple way to check if your body can handle sugar properly during pregnancy.
At Klinik Caring, Impian Emas, we perform the MGTT test to detect early changes in blood sugar, so that we can protect both mother and baby.
Why the MGTT Test Is Important
When blood sugar is too high, it can cause:- Larger baby size (macrosomia), which may make delivery more difficult
- Low blood sugar in the baby after birth
- Higher risk of high blood pressure or pre-eclampsia — a pregnancy condition where blood pressure rises and may cause swelling, headaches, or vision changes
- Increased risk of diabetes for the mother later in life
When the MGTT Test Is Done
The MGTT test is usually performed between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy. It may be done earlier if you have risk factors such as:
- Family history of diabetes
- Being overweight
- Previous large baby (over 4 kg)
- Previous pregnancy with gestational diabetes
How the Test Is Done
- You will fast overnight (no food or drinks except plain water).
- A blood sample will be taken to check your fasting sugar level.
- You will drink a sweet glucose drink.
- After two hours, another blood sample will be taken to see how your body has processed the sugar.
What to Expect
- You may feel slightly full or nauseous after drinking the glucose drink, but this feeling usually passes quickly.
- No medication or injections are involved.
- Results are usually ready within a few days, and our doctor will explain them clearly in person.
