Have you ever heard of, "This shipment requires an additional RMxxx fee"? Each time you hear it, doesn't it seem a bit strange? Why would there be an extra charge? Today, let me enlighten you on the types of charges collected at ports.
Actually, fees are only incurred under the following three circumstances:
1. Detention Fee
Typically, there are deadlines from the moment you unload the container at the port until you return it to the shipping company. If you exceed this deadline, you may incur detention charges. However, if the shipping company has specified FREE TIME, it means they provide FREE DETENTION along with FREE DEMURRAGE.
2. Demurrage Fee
Demurrage refers to the time from when the container is unloaded at the port, including customs clearance, until you remove the container from the port. There is a time limit for this process. If you exceed this limit, the shipping company will charge you additional fees. For example, if the shipping company grants you 7 days of free demurrage, but you fail to remove the container from the port within 7 days, you will be required to pay demurrage fees.
3. Storage Fee
Now that we've covered this, I believe you have a good understanding of the fees charged at ports. It's crucial to manage the unloading process and timing effectively to reduce the likelihood of incurring additional charges.
