The Jaecoo Omoda C9 ¡®SUV coupe¡¯ launches next month, with AWD deliveries in January 2025 and 2WD in May/June.

05-Nov-2024

Jaecoo Malaysia is preparing to launch its second model, the Omoda C9, and has unveiled the full rollout timeline. This ‘off-road SUV coupe’ is set to make its official debut in December.

Deliveries for the Omoda C9, which is locally assembled at Chery’s Shah Alam plant, will begin in January 2025 for the AWD model. Those opting for the 2WD version will need to wait a bit longer, with deliveries scheduled for May or June 2025. The C9 is available for booking, with an estimated price of RM185,000 for the 2WD and RM195,000 for the AWD.

If you attended the C9’s public preview at 1 Utama last week—which, according to Jaecoo Malaysia, drew 5,000 visitors—you’d know that the C9 is a substantial vehicle. At 4,775 mm long and 1,920 mm wide, it is 53 mm longer and 60 mm wider than the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro, which is a seven-seater SUV in the D-segment.

This spacious five-seater has a wheelbase of 2,800 mm, which is nearly 100 mm (90 mm) longer than the Tiggo 8. It’s longer and wider but also lower by 34 mm, giving it a strong, muscular look. The boot space is quite generous at 660 liters, which can be expanded to 1,783 liters when the rear seats are folded down.

Under the roomy hood, there’s a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine that produces 261 PS and 400 Nm of torque. The power is sent to the front wheels for the 2WD model or to all four wheels in the AWD version, using an eight-speed automatic transmission. In China, this model is known as the Exeed RX, which has a similar engine that produces 249 PS and 385 Nm, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission that drives the front wheels. The Exeed also offers a 1.5T plug-in hybrid option.

While the C9 features common front MacPherson struts and rear multi-link suspension, it also boasts a Continuous Damping Control (CDC) adaptive suspension, which is rare for an SUV priced under RM200,000. Each corner has 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels fitted with 245/50 Michelin e-Primacy tires, including a matching spare. The C9 2WD offers three drive modes, while the AWD version has four additional off-road modes.

This upscale model comes packed with features. It includes a Tesla-style push-button door release, rhythmic ambient lighting, a combined 24.6-inch display, and a 14-speaker Sony audio system with speakers built into the driver’s headrest. The air conditioning features a three-zone system and a fragrance option that lets you choose your favorite scent from a large touchscreen. Rear passengers enjoy B-pillar vents in addition to the central ones.

Other highlights include ventilated front seats, a leather-wrapped dashboard, shift paddles, a head-up display, an eight-way powered driver’s seat with memory for six positions, a dashcam, and a 540-degree surround view camera. The rear seats can recline with power, and there’s an electric steering column along with double-glazed front windows.

For safety, the C9 is equipped with eight airbags and a ‘Level 2.5’ ADAS system, which includes blind spot detection, door opening warnings, lane departure warnings, lane departure prevention, lane change assist, emergency lane keeping assist, and a driver monitoring system. The C9 could very well be the best-equipped car under RM200,000 in Malaysia.

Besides black and white, the Omoda C9 will also come in a stylish matte grey option for an extra RM3,000, which is a first for a CKD vehicle.
