  • Agilent 2 Minute Tutorial - Material Preparation and Cleaning for Ultrahigh Vacuum

Material preparation and cleaning in ion pump manufacturing is critical to achieving ultrahigh vacuum pressures. One cleaning process to which the pump components are subjected is vacuum firing, through which the outgassing rate of the pump is reduced, and the achievement of the ultimate pressure is assured. In this video, Senior Applications Engineer John M. Screech interviews Chiara Paolini, Ion Pump Quality and Test Manager to learn about cleaning for UHV. Category by Ion Pump

  • Agilent 2 Minute Tutorial - Combining Vacuum Sensors to Make Wide Range Gauges

No one gauge technology will provide pressure measurement throughout the range of vacuum. Combining vacuum sensors can produce a gauge capable of measuring pressure better than with any single technology. After having highlighted the properties of individual sensors, i.e. Pirani, Capacitance Manometer, Hot Filament Ionization, and IMG, this video shows some sensor combinations to measure pressure in a vacuum system. Category by Gauges
  • Agilent 2 Minute Tutorial - Measuring Ultrahigh Vacuum Pressure

Ionization gauges convert residual molecules to positively charged ions, and then attract them to a negatively charged collector where they create a measurable current. Modifications to high vacuum ionization gauges can optimize their performance at a very low pressure. Category by Gauges
  • Agilent 2 Minute Tutorial - Identifying Virtual Leaks in UHV Systems

When detecting leaks, it is important to distinguish between virtual and real ones. Examples of virtual leaks can be: gas desorption, diffusion, trapped volume, and back streaming. Leak-up or rate-of-rise tests can indicate whether a vacuum system's base pressure is limited by virtual or real leaks. Category by Leak Detection
  • Agilent 2 Minute Tutorial - How Thermal Gauges Can Benefit UHV Systems

Thermal gauges, out of all the available gauge technologies, offer excellent value for measuring rough vacuum pressure, but even UHV and XHV system can benefit from them. All thermal gauges operate by heating a filament and exposing it to the vacuum system. This video explains why, how, and which thermal gauges can be successfully used on ultra-high vacuum systems, and how they operate to achieve both accuracy and durability. Category by Gauges
  • Agilent 2 Minute Tutorial How Conductance Impacts Pumping Speed

A system with poorly designed conductance can have drastic consequences on the effective pumping speed: the cornerstone of this tutorial is to emphasize the need to design a system that does not have negative effects on the performance of a high or ultrahigh vacuum system. The impact of conductance on pumping speed can be demonstrated by inserting a Conductance restriction between the pump and the Vacuum Chamber. Category by Turbo Pump
  • Agilent 2 Minute Tutorial - Creating Ultrahigh Vacuum

One of the most challenging tasks for vacuum system designers is to create ultra-high and extreme-high vacuum pressures. Pumps capable of generating UHV and XHV pressure include Sputter Ion Pumps, Titanium Sublimation Pumps and Non-Evaporative Getters. With a variety of pumping elements available, one can select the most appropriate pump or combination of pumps for the UHV or XHV application. Category by Ion Pump

  • Vacuum for Physics Research

The world of physics is undergoing an explosion of breakthrough achievements, including the realization of long-predicted phenomena such as the observation of the Higgs Boson, measurement of gravitational waves, and the use of particle beams to destroy inoperable brain tumors. Behind these achievements is the enabling technology of vacuum. Beginning with the simple question ¡°Why do we need vacuum?¡± for this research, we will move on to discuss the types of vacuum systems required, and finally some of the challenges physics researchers face in achieving sufficient vacuum, and some techniques they employ to overcome them. Achieving the very low pressure conditions required for these processes is not straightforward. For example, creating the vacuum necessary for particle physics research requires at least three, and often four, different vacuum pump technologies. Understanding how gas molecules behave at sub-atmospheric pressures is critical in designing effective vacuum environments, choosing the correct components and materials, and understanding maintenance requirements. This webinar explains the process of generating, measuring, and maintaining vacuum pressures specific to these areas of physics research. Category by Ion Pump
